Cap Embroidery: How to Choose Text, Colour and Style

“Print your own cap” is a common search. On JACS custom text caps, however, the wording is embroidered. The text is stitched into the cap, and you choose the words and embroidery colour during personalisation.

That affects how you should approach the design. The words need to work on a curved surface, the colour needs to show against the fabric and the cap should suit the person wearing it. Here is how to make those decisions in a useful order.

What can you personalise on a JACS custom cap?

In the custom cap collection, first choose a cap and font style. You can then add your own text and choose from the embroidery colours shown in the personalisation tool.

These custom caps are made to order, and personalised products are excluded from the returns policy. Check your spelling, colour and product choices before completing the purchase. For a logo, illustration or another option that is not offered in the tool, contact JACS with your idea before ordering.

Start with the words, not the font

Embroidered text is often clearer when it has a specific purpose. Should it show a name, capture an inside joke or identify someone's role in a group? Try describing the purpose in one sentence before you start designing.

  • Name: a first name, nickname or group name.
  • Short message: something the recipient actually says or believes in.
  • Place or year: a city, trip or significant moment.
  • Role: a simple title within a team or at an event.

Short text is design advice, not a universal character limit. Enter the complete wording in the tool and judge how it looks on the chosen product. If the words feel crowded, start by removing anything the recipient already understands.

Choose contrast according to how visible the text should be

Light embroidery on dark fabric, or dark embroidery on light fabric, makes the words easier to see. Similar tones create a quieter look, but you should examine the preview carefully to make sure the words do not disappear.

Ask yourself what matters most:

  • Should someone be able to read the text immediately from a few metres away?
  • Should they only notice it when they come closer?
  • Is the cap a fun detail for one occasion or something to wear regularly?

The last question is especially useful for gifts and group caps. A discreet colour combination may be easier to wear after the occasion. Strong contrast can be right when the text is the whole point.

Three cap styles, three different looks

Dad cap: smooth cotton and a low profile

The dad cap is unstructured and low profile, with an adjustable strap.

The Custom Embroidered Dad Cap is made from chino cotton twill. Its product information specifies an unstructured six-panel construction, low profile, embroidered ventilation eyelets and an adjustable strap with a buckle. It is a good starting point for a soft, relaxed shape.

Vintage cap: washed cotton and a worn-in feel

The vintage cap has washed cotton, a curved peak and a deliberately worn-in look.

The Custom Embroidered Vintage Cap is made from brushed washed cotton. It has an unstructured six-panel construction, low profile, pre-curved peak and a self-fabric strap with a brass-effect buckle. Choose it when the vintage feel is part of the design, rather than simply because you like one of the colours.

Corduroy cap: the fabric becomes part of the design

Corduroy adds distinctive texture even when the text is simple.

The Custom Embroidered Corduroy Cap is made from cotton corduroy and has a soft, unstructured crown, cotton twill sweatband and taping, and an adjustable buckle. With so much character already in the fabric, a few words and a considered colour choice can be enough.

A simple way to choose a cap style

  1. Look at the recipient's favourite cap. Is the fabric smooth, washed or textured?
  2. Compare the shape. Do they like a soft, low profile or a more defined crown?
  3. Decide how visible the wording should be. Choose the contrast before settling on a particular colour.
  4. Test the full wording. Check the spelling and how the words are arranged in the preview.
  5. Read the current product information. Check the colours, materials and terms for the exact cap you have chosen.

Embroidery with a logo or illustration

The text tool is not a promise that any logo or image can be embroidered in the same way. For company logos, illustrations and other special requests, the design, placement, quantity and terms need to be discussed separately.

Send the best original artwork you have, describe the cap style you have in mind and give an approximate quantity. Contact JACS here so the possibilities can be confirmed before you order.

Questions about cap embroidery

Is the text printed or embroidered?

The text is embroidered on the JACS custom styles described here. You choose the wording and an available embroidery colour during personalisation.

Can I write anything I like?

Check what fits and how the text appears on your chosen product. Also consider spelling, readability and whether the message will feel good to wear.

Which style is best for short text?

That depends on the recipient's style. The dad cap offers a smoother, cleaner surface, the vintage cap a washed look and corduroy a distinct texture. Start with the shape and fabric the person likes.

Can I order a cap with my own logo?

Contact JACS with the logo, preferred cap, placement and approximate quantity. We can then discuss whether the design is possible and which terms apply.
