The Ultimate Guide to Cap Care: Cleaning and Maintenance for Longevity

Before washing a cap, check its care label. The fabric, brim and embroidery all belong to the same product, so a cotton label alone does not tell you how the finished cap should be cleaned. Start with the instructions for your particular model.

Start with gentle spot-cleaning

For embroidered caps, begin with a soft, damp cloth on the area that needs cleaning. If detergent is needed, choose a mild product without bleach and follow the cap's care instructions. Avoid brushes and vigorous rubbing around the embroidery.

Can you wash a cap in a washing machine?

Do not assume that a dad hat or cotton cap is machine washable. Printful's guidance for embroidered caps recommends cleaning by hand because machine washing can affect the shape and embroidery. A white cap is not an exception to the advice to avoid bleach.

When is hand-washing appropriate?

If the label allows hand-washing and spot-cleaning is not enough, use the method and water temperature specified for the cap. Handle it gently and remove detergent carefully. If the label is missing or unclear, ask for advice before soaking the whole cap.

Different fabrics do not automatically share the same washing instructions. Use the model's care guidance for corduroy, wool and blended fabrics as well as cotton.

Drying and storage

Let the cap air-dry and keep its shape supported without stretching it. Avoid tumble-drying and direct heat. Put it away once it is fully dry, in a place where the crown and brim will not be crushed. Keep it away from prolonged direct sunlight.

A quick checklist before cleaning

  • Identify the cap model and read its care label.
  • Check whether a small area needs attention or the whole cap needs cleaning.
  • Choose a method permitted by the label.
  • Allow time for the cap to dry before wearing or storing it.
